Hunyad Castle

After a visit in, what is today Hunedoara, King Charles I of Hungary ordered the building of a castle that was supposed to be its residence. The building of the castle ended in 1315. In the XV century the Hunyad Castle was restored and transformed into the greatest Gothic, with Renaissance elements castle in Romania.
The imposing building is home of some impressive legends, one of them being the raven legend.
It is said that John Hunyadi was the illegitimate son of Sigismund of Luxemburg and Erzsébet Morzsinay. In order to protect Erzsébet from the shame of having a baby with no father Sigismund decided to marry her to one of his best knights, Vojk who is considered to be John Hunyadi true father. For the child to be recognized as a royal blood when he will grow up, Sigismund gave Erzsébet a ring, which during a trip to Vojk home was lost. A raven tried to steal it but the young child John kills the bird with a bow. Thus the raven has become a symbol of the descendants of John, who took the name Corvinus after the Latin 'Corvus' and Romanian 'Corb'.
A large number of movies were filmed here: The Damned Kings, Henry the 8th, Nostradamus; also the castle has some connections with Vlad Dracul and Bram Stoker.
Today the Hunyad Castle is the most visited attraction in its region, many tourists doing their best to spend as much time visiting the beautiful castle as possible.Less
