The Merry Cemetery

The Merry Cemetery from Sapanta is for sure the most strange cemetery in the whole world.
Rather than the grotesque image of sad tombstones and the feeling of quiet and sadness, the Merry Cemetery gives it's visitors another feeling, a feeling of humor, positivism and color. Many have wondered why this community has chosen to make fun of such a serious step of a persons life.
For sure, the belief in a better life after death makes it easier for many to embrace the idea that we are all mortals and we have to take the step in the afterlife.
Basically, each person who was buried here received a very colorful tombstone with the a funny story about his life and the nature of his death.
Today the Merry Cemetery is a open-air museum and a very important touristic attraction.
